Hospital Hilarity at Malmesbury Carnival 2019

Malmesbury Carnival Winners Hilditch

Once again, The Hilditch Group were principal sponsors of the Malmesbury Carnival, with residents and visitors lining the streets, it was a fun packed day enjoyed by all.

The theme for this year’s carnival was ‘television’! The Hilditch Group have been specialist auctioneers for the last 30 years, synonymous with the resale of medical equipment, our head of carnival operations thought it fitting that we maintain our medical mischief with a ‘Carry On Doctor’ themed float.

For the trusty Hilditch team the day started early, loading the float and making sure everything was safely secured. While the barbeque was being fired up, our team of tiny helpers decorated the float with fake blood and fancy-dress hospital themed paraphernalia. I am not sure these little helpers quite knew who Kenneth Williams or Frankie Howard were, but they Carried On Regardless all the same. With a belly full of barbeque grub, we were off to join the other floats for judging. Facing some stiff competition, we thought that we were not in with a chance of winning anything. First prize went to Crudwell Primary School for their excellent entry entitled ‘Pirates of The Curry Bean’, a pirate ship, decorated by the pupils from the primary school, and pulled by a tractor. With first place out of sight we hung our heads in shame and returned to our float. Only to find 5 minutes later that we were being presented with the Paul Dove Award for the ‘Most outstanding entry in the spirit of Carnival’, and we have an actual real live trophy to show for our efforts.

Jubilant with our success we began the procession with a new found festival spirit, joy in our hearts and with fat beaming smiles on our faces. The Malmesbury streets were packed with carnival revellers eager to see all of the wacky floats. We passed out sweets to the children of Malmesbury while coming under fire from a deluge of donations from the public.

The carnival has been a regular fixture on the streets of Malmesbury for over 100 years, receiving donations from principal sponsors, like The Hilditch Group, and donations in the form of mountains of money thrown onto the floats on the day. Last year the Malmesbury Carnival raised £17,000 for various local charitable causes around the Malmesbury area. Over all the outcome was great and to see such huge volumes of crowds enjoy the fun packed day was even greater. We only had to dodge one shower, which didn’t dampen our spirits as the barbeque was still alight once the rain had passed. Needless to say, The Hilditch Group would like to thank all that participated and assisted in any way, shape or form; we could never have done this without you all. A huge thankyou goes out to the Hilditch Group staff, family members, their children and volunteers for their help and time in preparing the float. Good team effort! An extra special thankyou goes to all the carnival visitors, who lined the streets and created such a great atmosphere making this carnival an honour to be part of, the festival organisers and volunteers who made this a fun and safe festival for onlookers and participants alike. You all made this a momentous day of magical medical mishaps for the Hilditch Group’s staff and family members.

I am not sure whether The Hilditch Group can match the success of this year’s carnival next year, but we certainly will try!
